The idea is to truly balance your budget, making sure that necessary expenses are met and you aren't overspending in any category (or that you make adjustments if you do). It could take you a few months to get your categories finalized, and they’re likely to continue to evolve over time. In the first few days, you invest a lot of time thinking through what categories you need, though a few dozen are provided to help you get started. Your success depends in part on how well you define your categories. If you have bills that are paid quarterly or annually, for example, YNAB divvies them up so you dedicate a portion of each month's money to them and aren’t ever ambushed by a large expense. For example, you might have an unexpected expense or a regular bill that comes in higher than expected. Then when you get paid again or get a big chunk of money, you decide what categories need funding during the period prior to your next inflow of cash.Īs you go, there will be times when you have to move money around among categories. You start with the money you have in your account(s), dividing it between spending, debt, and savings. Every dollar should be assigned to either a spending category or savings so that at the end of the pay period, there’s no money left over. YNAB starts with your income and asks you to give every dollar a job. In addition, the company has multiple security types, including two-step verification. YNAB is not a fly-by-night company it's been around since 2004. It uses bank-grade or better encryption, and it does not store your bank credentials. The policy is strong, especially the part about completely deleting your account should you leave the service (some personal finance sites let your data hang around for a time even after you’ve stopped using them). YNAB, like the other personal finance services I've reviewed, promises to keep your information encrypted and secure and makes its full security policy (Opens in a new window) publicly available. (Opens in a new window) Read Our WalletHub Review In fact, it can be a good adjunct to Mint or Quicken Deluxe if you're serious about controlling your budget. Still, if you want a more innovative method of budgeting that helps you balance your monthly budget rather than just comparing budgeted amounts to actual income and spending, then YNAB is an excellent choice. And Quicken Deluxe, another Editors’ Choice winner, costs about half as much as YNAB when paying annually. Other personal finance applications, such as Editors' Choice Mint and Credit Karma, are free. In addition to its learning curve, YNAB is more expensive than most competitors. Used conscientiously, YNAB improves your chances of making a budget work by helping you understand your saving and spending habits better. YNAB can be difficult to master, but it provides many educational materials, both tutorial and philosophical. The site connects directly to your financial accounts to pull in balances and transactions that flow directly into your budget, so you can instantly see where you stand with your spending. This online personal finance software is built on the philosophy that every dollar you're projected to earn needs a job, so you assign it to either be spent or saved. YNAB, which stands for You Need a Budget, takes an unusual approach to personal budgeting. We do not recommend using a traditional spinning hard disk at all, but if you do use one, it ought to be rated at 7200 RPM.Īpple’s Fusion Drive, though it technically includes an SSD, is not recommended for use on a show computer under any circumstances, as the user has no control over which data is stored on the SSD portion and which is stored on the hard disk, nor any say in when the Mac decides to shuffle data between the two. The more data you’re pulling off your disk and pushing out of your speakers or projectors, the more an SSD is a good idea. QLab is happiest with a solid state drive (SSD) because they are, to put it plainly, really really fast. QLab 4 is able to address as much RAM as your Mac can provide. As with processing power, complex shows can benefit from (and may require) more RAM. Loading and playing cues uses RAM, so the more audio or video that needs to be loaded at any given moment, the higher the RAM requirement will be. While we don’t recommend using a Mac with an integrated GPU for video-intensive shows, if you do use such a Mac we strongly encourage you to install the maximum possible amount of RAM. The size of this portion is based on the total amount of system RAM installed, so the more RAM you have, the more of it will be used for VRAM. The Mac Pro, iMac Pro, some MacBook Pro models, and a few other iMac models have discrete GPUs.įor Macs with an integrated GPU, which is all Mac Minis, the MacBook, all MacBook Airs, most iMac models, and most MacBook Pro models, the GPU uses a portion of system RAM as VRAM. Testing is, as always, important.įor those seeking best-possible video performance, a Mac with a discrete GPU is the way to go. For the 2013-2018 “Darth Vader’s wastebasket” Mac Pro, all graphics connections are on the same GPU so you don’t have any choices in the matter. If you use a pre-2014 Mac Pro (“cheese grater”) or a late-2019 Mac Pro (“insanely expensive”), dedicating one modest video card for your operator display and one higher-end card for each projector, or one higher-end card per two projectors, is a good strategy. Since those two displays share a single integrated GPU, you can improve overall performance by lowering the resolution on your operator’s display the computer will be doing less work for the operator’s display, which means more power is available for video crunching. Mac Minis, for example, can drive two displays simultaneously one for your operator and one for your projector. For video folks, what you need depends entirely upon what you’re trying to accomplish. GPU and VRAMįor audio-only users, GPU considerations are fairly negligible. Processors on Macs cannot be upgraded after they’re purchased, but most Macs let you select from several processor options at the time of purchase. Large numbers of audio or video cues playing back simultaneously, for example, benefit from an i7, i9, or Xeon processor which have better handling of multi-threading tasks than i3 or i5 processors. The more work QLab needs to do, the happier it will be with a more powerful processor. QLab is likewise not supported in a virtual machine environment. Please do yourself a big favor, and just keep away from those. QLab is not supported on “hackintoshes” at all. Please take this information not as a firm set of instructions about what to do, but rather as a set of recommendations about what to consider. What follows is a discussion of general concepts surrounding processor, GPU, RAM, and hard disk use for QLab. Starting with version 4.6.8, QLab 4 is compatible with macOS 11 (Big Sur) and Macs which use Apple Silicon (M1) processors.īecause of QLab’s great flexibility and the varied scenarios in which it is used, it can be difficult to determine ahead of time how much computer power a given QLab workspace will require. It requires macOS 10.10 or higher, and will work on any Mac that can run 10.10. Go to to register to use the database. Paid subscriptions will be available beginning November 1. (10/1/21)

The frogs will go up on you and your people and all your officials.'”ĥ Then the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.’” So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land. They will come up into your palace and your bedroom and onto your bed, into the houses of your officials and on your people, and into your ovens and kneading troughs. If you refuse to let them go, I will plague your whole country with frogs. Read this slowly so you catch everything that’s happening here:Įxodus 8:1-15 ~ Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, `This is what the LORD says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. Let’s look at what they were dealing with … those poor girls were not the first ones to be invaded by frogs. It was putrid! After we were done ridding the house of all the frogs, I can remember thinking what it had to have been like in Egypt with the plague of frogs. A few of the frogs didn’t make it … it was horrible.Īside from the screams and mayhem in the house, I can remember the smell. So the two of us who were the only adults were forced to catch all these frogs. It was a nightmare! There had to be 40-50 frogs jumping all over the place! And, these girls weren’t about to touch them. Suddenly I woke up to blood-curdling screams … frogs were jumping all over the place! The boys had caught buckets of big, fat, ugly frogs from the little ditch that ran in front of our house, brought them into town, opened a window to the house and let them loose knowing it would scare the girls. There were about 15 girls all camped out at a friend’s house, sleeping anywhere they could find a place to sprawl out. We would have the whole youth group meet at our house to spend the evening with a campfire until the wee hours of the morning and then the girls would leave to sleep at another house in town while the guys camped out – about 10 miles apart. We had a large yard out in the country and the guys loved camping out there. Years ago I was youth leader at our church in KY. Not for me! Ha! Just not my cup of tea! Youth Group Nightmare We used to travel to Illinois for a visit and the guys would always go froggin’! They’d come back with these big old fat ugly frogs and she would fry frog legs – for some they’re a delicacy. She had frog statues and figurines all over her yard! Reminds me of my husband’s cousin in Illinois … her entire house is filled to the brim with frogs – every shape and size! Amen and amen! Frogs Everywhereįrogs? When the PSNS is active, the SNS is less active, and vice-versa. The SNS and PSNS are always in constant fluctuation with each other like yin and yang. The autonomic nervous system (unconscious or automatic part of the nervous system) can be split into two halves - the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system: Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) In order to understand how the mandrake works, we have to briefly cover what the parasympathetic nervous system is and what it does for the body. This inhibits a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, the primary neurotransmitter involved with the parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS). These alkaloids work by blocking acetylcholine receptors. Other active ingredients include scopine, cuscohygrine, apoatropine, 3-alpha-tigloyloxytropane, 3-alpha, 6-beta-ditigloyloxytropane, and belladonnines. Mandrake owes the majority of its effects to its tropane alkaloid content - namely hyoscyamine, atropine, and scopolamine. Medicinally, mandrake was used in small doses as a soporific during surgery, applied topically for joint pain, and to cure depression and mania. Harvesters may have gotten some of the active tropane alkaloids into the bloodstream through an open wound or cut while harvesting, which could have resulted in death. This tradition likely stems from the plant’s toxic traits. The harvester would then hide from a safe distance and cover his ears. To avoid taking damage while harvesting mandrake, harvesters would tie the root to a dog, who could then be lured away with some food to pull the root from the ground. It was thought that once the root was pulled above ground, it would scream so loud it killed anybody within earshot (as portrayed in this Harry Potter scene). The more human-like shape of the root, the more valuable it was.ĭried mandrake root was thought to bring good fortune and wellbeing to those who had one. The unique effects of the mandrake, combined with the very human-like shape of the roots, have resulted in a lot of superstition surrounding the plant. Mandrake Specs & Technical Details: Active Ingredientsĭelirium, psychosis, blurry vision, inability to urinate, dry mouth, fever, & death The difference between an active dose and an overdose is very narrow.Īdditionally, most people that trip on mandrake experience what can be described as “nightmarish” hallucinations, often lasting several days. Under no circumstances is this a plant anybody should use for its psychedelic effects. In higher doses, mandrake is a deadly poison. The hallucinations are so strong and so believable, most people lose the ability to differentiate between what they’re imagining and what’s actually happening in real life. In moderate doses, mandrake is a powerful psychedelic and deliriant. In lower doses, mandrake is a hypnotic - inducing feelings of dizziness, confusion, and sedation. Delerium is the inability to differentiate between what’s real and what’s imagined. Tropane alkaloids are highly toxic and cause drug-induced delirium. These are the same active ingredients in plants like datura and Brugmansia. The root of the mandrake contains a collection of powerful hallucinogenic compounds called tropane alkaloids. Mandrake ( Mandragora spp.) is a small, unassuming plant with a rich history of use as medicine, poison, and mysticism. Subversive in content, Minute of Islands is fairly different from what’s out there but offers much of the same as its contemporaries. The bedrock of these meditations is Minute of Islands’ visual magnetism. Minute of Islands is an incredibly stunning game with a timely narrative, minimal gameplay, and small platforming puzzles. Minute of Islands surely has something to say about the state of the world, intentional or not. Isolation coupled with depression and Mo’s feeling of the weight of the world on her shoulders, it’s no wonder this disembodied voice begins to berate her. Whether you’re in a home with family or living alone, far away from everyone, we’re all experiencing some level of isolation right now. Something we can all relate to is the level of isolation Mo is experiencing right now. Whether the voice is an actual narrator or Mo herself is unclear. Less interested in telling the story, the disembodied voice begins berating Mo, telling her that no one will ever love her and her family is right for hating her. Eventually, the narrator begins primarily talking to Mo and becomes less of a narrator and more a stream of consciousness. Sometimes though, the narrator begins talking to Mo directly. Throughout the game you’re treated to a disembodied voice that acts as a narrator. Once unlocked, she returns to the real world and continues on her adventure. Mo will find herself in a fever dream, chasing after memories to grant her a key to unlock a music box. Although the gaseous toxins that permeate the island when the ventilators are inoperable aren’t deadly, they do cause hallucinations. I understand what’s going on but not why or how Mo and her family managed to get to the poisonous island. Even in the first island when you meet Mo’s uncle, he drops an indication that Mo bears the weight of the world on her shoulders, which is the most interesting story thread throughout the game.Įnvironmental storytelling is consequential in Minute of Islands. Now, it would seem only some of her family members remain and they’re not too thrilled with her. Mo’s voyage from island to island shows her the remains of a civilization that used to be somewhat robust and healthy. Gathering her omni-switch, a scepter looking multi-tool, she sets off to get the ventilators working again and to revitalize the brothers giant. The primary story thread begins with Mo waking up to find out that the giant spirits she’s supposed to be tending to aren’t, for lack of a better word, operational. Navigation, while initially daunting, is actually quite intuitive. Finding the correct path may seem difficult on screenshots alone but there are white indicators that show you which pieces of debris you can climb and where you can jump down. Often littered with loads of trash, discarded machine parts, carcasses, and dilapidated housing, it’s sometimes difficult to navigate through the trash to find the way through. The biggest puzzle you’ll run into is navigation. Minute of Islands labels itself as a puzzle/platformer but there aren’t very many puzzles throughout the game, at least in the traditional sense. MonsterVine was provided with a Playstation 5 code for review Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox Series X|S, Playstation 5(reviewed) Without these brothers, the islands are doomed, and Mo is the curator of these four giant souls. Those four brothers are the only things keeping the island alive, powering the island, powering the ventilators that protect the island from the poison air. There are four brother spirits inhabiting giants, underground, beneath the islands. Her surroundings will likely give you pause though, as she wakes up and is immediately tasked with finding out what’s going wrong. Matching yellow rain boots on her feet, you’re put at ease with how familiar and cute she looks. Her arms aren’t shown as they’re presumably inside the coat. Mo is dressed up in what seems like a fairly large raincoat or possibly a sweater. The first thing I noticed about Minute of Islands is the game’s protagonist, Mo. Hari Kunzru never has a problem coming up with the premise of his books, and as they unfold, the stories have a trademark style of gathering pace and Proust-like, sending us on wild-goose chases that suddenly turn up a nugget of gold, linking us to the theme of the book. His darker appearance does nothing to comfort him as he wades through the surrounding areas, still rattling with ideas of white supremacy, and stumbles into the underbelly of the town in chaotic fashion.Īs obsesses over a tawdry TV cop show, scanning for actor’s lines that seem to be straight out of legendary works of philosophy, connections that may or may not be there emerge in this story that may or may not be his final piece written at the retreat. The narrator finds himself attached to the cleaner of the residence, whose startling circumstances push him to come to think of his own writing as banal and narcissistic, seeing patterns in everything around him as if another reality were hiding in plain sight. As the residence cramps his style (communal areas for working, overbearing colleagues who tease him) he is drawn to the history of the place around him, exploring German Romanticism and the 19th-century murder-suicide of writer Kleist, a strange chap who campaigned (and not for long) for a female companion to kill before taking his own life, on the land the residence occupies. The narrator, a writer we can assume is, like Kunzru, of mixed Kashmiri descent, accepts a prestigious place in a writers’ retreat in Wannsee, the Berlin setting for the Nazi’s Final Solution talks. This offering from British novelist Hari Kunzru pulls at the threads of a crumbling world to discover we’ve been in this special hell before. A faux-autobiographical story of a frustrated middle-aged writer and his pending breakdown explores despotism in all its forms. |
